The global listing of the Smart Cities 2020 was released along with the findings of the role of technology in COVID-19. Singapore bagged the top spot in the list of Smart cities for the second consecutive time.

The Smart City Index is the rankings given to the cities across the globe on the grounds of economical and technological standards. Citizens of these cities will also be surveyed to know their opinion of how smart they think their cities are.

The 2020 Smart City Index was prepared as a collaborative effort of the Institute for Management Development (IMD) and the Singapore University for Technology and Design (SUTD)

However, major Indian cities saw a drop in the listings of smart cities globally. The rankings of New Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru fell down significantly.

The rankings of the four cities went down by around 20 rankings when compared to the Smart Cities Index 2019. Hyderabad's rank fell to 85th from 67, New Delhi's rank fell to 86th from 68.

On the other hand, the national capital Delhi's rank went down by 18 rankings to 86 from the 68th spot. Bengaluru, which was at the 79th place in 2019, bagged the 95th spot in this edition.

The level of air pollution and the sufferings faced by cities with the deadly outbreak of the novel pandemic resulted in the downfall of the cities in the global listings.
