Hockey is the national sport of India. But the popularity and reception it gets is very less compared to Cricket. To give an example of the massive craze Cricket enjoys among other games, Indian national Football captain Sunil Chhetri requested fans to support football as well and come to the stadiums to see matches.

This speaks volumes about the craze and following cricket among fans. The Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) is the most influential in the world without any doubt. The International Cricket Council (ICC) distributes the annual revenue to the cricket boards by playing a big brother role.

Yet again, BCCI proved itself as the influential cricket board as it was allotted the major share of ICC's annual revenue. It is said that BCCI got as much as 38.5 percent of ICC's revenue which translates to $231 million. This is more than a few cricket boards combined.

The decision was taken at the recent ICC Meeting and the same model of revenue distribution would continue in the coming years as per the reports. England and Wales Cricket Board and Australia are in the next places in revenue share with 6.89 and 6.25 percent respectively.

It is known that India is the biggest market for the ICC as far as cricket revenue is concerned. So BCCI gets the major share of the ICC's annual income. However, a few cricket boards like Pakistan Cricket Board are not happy with the revenue model and want changes in the way the revenue is distributed.

India has come a long way in this. Compared to 1983, the situation changed a lot. After the 1983 World Cup, Cricket started seeing a big rise in popularity. But Jagmohan Dalmiya becoming ICC President is seen as a big development. During his stint, he played a big role. He increased ICC's revenue during his tenure.

On the other hand, BCCI focused on the revenue and income it can get from various forms like TV rights and sponsorships. The money BCCI gets through this is insane. The emergence of the T20 format and IPL also played a big role in this.

Looking at the impact BCCI has and the revenue it generates, it is no wonder that ICC is giving a major share of income. But the journey the BCCI had to reach the situation is wonderful. Looking for sponsors at one time to become the richest cricket board, BCCI went through many milestones.
