If Government grants Tax Exemption for a Movie, Who should receive the benefit? Certainly, It's the public who watch that flick in the theaters! Did that happen in the case of 'Gautamiputra Satakarni'?
Advocate Adarsh Kumar filed a Public Interest Litigation in High Court last year with the same logic. He brought to the notice of HC that ticket rates of 'Gautamiputra Satakarni' remained unchanged even after Tax Exemption.
During the hearing, High Court wondered how could Producer claim the benefits of Entertainment Tax Exemption when it's intended to draw more crowds to the theaters. Notices has been served to the Telugu States to clarify whether Producer or Ticket Buyer should be the beneficiary of Tax Exemption. Next hearing of the case is on August 16th.
If High Court passes an order in favour of the public, What about the revenue received by the Makers of 'Gautamiputra Satakarni' through Tax Exemption? Will the State Government take the responsibility to recover it?
