The debate about film certification is becoming more serious today. One important question is whether movies that show sexual assault or rape scenes should be given a U/A certificate. A U/A certificate means children can watch the film with parental guidance. But when a film includes very sensitive and disturbing topics, many people feel this rating may not be suitable.
Sexual violence is not just another “mature” topic. It is a serious issue that affects real lives. Because of this, such scenes need to be handled with great care and responsibility. However, the bigger problem is not only the certificate. It is also about how these scenes are shown in films.
In some recent movies, scenes related to sexual assault do not always feel meaningful. Instead of being shown with care, they sometimes appear to be added just to shock the audience. This can reduce the importance of the issue and make it feel like a tool for entertainment rather than a serious subject.
For example, in Ustaad Bhagat Singh, directed by Harish Shankar, a sensitive scene received criticism. The emotional moment is quickly followed by a commercial song, which breaks the seriousness of the situation. This creates confusion and reduces the impact of the scene.
Similarly, in Pushpa 2, a sexual violence-related element appears suddenly in the climax. Many viewers felt that it did not connect well with the story. Instead of adding depth, it looked like an unnecessary addition.
These examples raise an important question. Are such scenes really needed for the story, or are they added just for impact? When serious topics are used only for shock value, they lose their meaning. It also shifts the audience’s focus from understanding the issue to just reacting emotionally.
Film certification boards may consider giving stricter ratings, like an A certificate, for such content. But the real responsibility lies with filmmakers. Writers and directors must treat sensitive topics with respect and purpose.
Today’s audiences are more aware. They can easily tell the difference between honest storytelling and forced scenes. Cinema has a strong influence, so it must handle serious subjects carefully. Some topics need respect, and films should never treat them lightly.
