The Northerners used to identify the South Indians as Madrasis and the entire South cinema used to be Tamil for them

Till a few years back, the Tamil film industry is the face of South cinema. The Northerners used to identify the South Indians as Madrasis and the entire South cinema used to be Tamil for them. As a matter of fact, Kollywood used to be very rich in content and made films with superior technical quality than others. Their stories, concepts, taking and everything used to be far ahead of other industries.

At a time when Tollywood was clouded with commercial movies, the Tamil industry used to come up with great films that dealt with serious issues. But the same Tamil cinema is now running after commercial success and many star heroes are interested in making crowd-pleasing films rather than picking quality subjects.

On the other hand, Telugu and Malayalam films are coming up with films that are shattering box office records. The Telugu film industry is making films that are becoming pan-Indian hits while the Malayalam film industry is making movies with different scripts that are winning hearts all over the country. The success rate has also dipped quite a bit in Kollywood which is concerning.

In the past six months, around 124 films have been released and only 7 managed to get the hit status which explains volumes about the lack of quality. With big names like Vijay and Ajith not focusing on films completely, the responsibility to score big hits are on the shoulders of seniors like Rajnikanth and Kamal Haasan once again.

However, the second half is looking hopeful for Kollywood with noted releases like 'Indian 2' on 12th July, Dhanush's 'Rayan', Vijay's 'GOAT', Rajni's 'Vettaiyan', Suriya's 'Kanguva', 'Amaran', Ajith's 'Vidaa Muyarchi' and others. Let us see if Kollywood gets back on the success track once again or not.
