Just a quiet theft that shook the system. A pirated copy of Kubera, the latest film from Sekhar Kammula starring Akkineni Nagarjuna and Dhanush, surfaced online within hours of its release. The catch? The illegal recording was traced straight back to PVR’s screen-5 in Hyderabad’s Central Mall. With pressure mounting, the Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce filed an official complaint with the Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police, kicking off a new wave of investigations.

This isn’t just a one-off incident. Piracy has been a growing threat to the film industry, and the case of Kubera only highlights how deep the problem runs. The Film Chamber’s Anti-Video Piracy Cell, using watermark technology, tracked the source and confirmed it came from the PVR Central location. The case has now been linked to a wider pattern, one that already saw a man named Kiran Kumar arrested for pirating 40 films over 18 months.

Kubera hit screens with high expectations, especially in Telugu-speaking regions. And it delivered, collecting big at the box office. Director Sekhar Kammula has openly said he’s confused about why the film didn’t do well in Tamil markets. Since the story and Dhanush’s role were made keeping Tamil audiences in mind, the dull response there has surprised him.

But this time, it’s not just about low ticket sales or mixed reviews, it’s about the trust between filmmakers, theatres, and the audience. A piracy leak from a well-known multiplex has shown a serious problem. As the investigation goes on, the film industry isn’t just looking for answers, it wants strict action.
