The recently released film “Michael once again brought Michael Jackson back into a bigger conversation. Fans celebrated the film for revisiting the genius, superstardom, and larger-than-life legacy of the King of Pop, as the film has collected $713 million already. But many critics felt that the film carefully stayed away from the darkest and most controversial chapter of MJ’s life. Now Netflix is stepping directly into that uncomfortable space.
Popular streaming site Netflix is coming up with a three-part docu-series titled “Michael Jackson: The Verdict”, which focuses on the explosive 2003 child molestation case on the pop-star, which shocked the world. And going by the trailer, this is not going to be a soft tribute piece, but a brutal look into both sides of the argument. The series dives deep into the allegations, courtroom drama, media frenzy and public outrage as well as love surrounding Jackson during that period. Archival footage, inside courtroom perspectives, juror interviews, journalists and legal voices are all being used to reconstruct what exactly happened during the sensational trial.
In many ways, this looks like the chapter that “Michael” intentionally avoided. That is why the timing of the documentary is getting questioned now. The biopic reminded audiences why Michael Jackson became one of the biggest entertainers in human history. But Netflix seems more interested in revisiting the gray area that haunted his legacy for decades. Hope MJ’s Michael movie critics can breathe a sigh of relief now.
