For years, Bollywood projected itself as the “main industry” of Indian cinema, and it called all other tinsel towns “regional cinema.” But slowly, many South Indian actors are exposing what really happens behind the glamour. Former heroine Simran, a diva of the 90s who has shaken the whole of South, has openly spoken about the disrespect she allegedly faced while working in Hindi cinema. Her comments are now going viral across film circles.
According to Simran, Bollywood producers bargain over hotel stays, flight tickets, and even question how many staff members South actors can bring along. She said these things made her feel insulted despite spending more than three decades in cinema and building a massive legacy down South. More than money, it’s the attitude of Bollywood makers that’s hurting south stars, if her comments are anything to go by.
And honestly, this is exactly the complaint many South stars quietly discuss in private. Of course, in Bollywood, only if you walk in with a massive entourage, luxury cars, and PR teams, you get treated like a “star.” Otherwise, even accomplished actors are sometimes treated casually. That’s why Dulquer Salmaan once revealed that he had to “create an illusion of stardom” in Bollywood just to receive basic respect on sets. Simran’s comments now add more weight to that argument.
Today, South cinema is dominating the Indian box office with its regular big-budget and workable films. Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada films are creating pan-India sensations regularly while Bollywood is struggling for consistency. Yet some old industry attitudes apparently still remain unchanged. But not for long, the insiders say!
