For the first time in many years, the top commercial chair in Kollywood suddenly looks empty. And that could become the biggest advantage for Suriya. At a time when his just-released Karuppu has collected over ₹150 crores gross, even with poor reviews and ratings, many are looking at the situation in a different way.

Superstar Rajinikanth is still delivering massive openings with movies like Coolie and the upcoming Jailer 2 maybe, but age is catching up. His film frequency has come down considerably. His market remains huge, but realistically, he cannot dominate the industry space the way he once did. Thala Ajith continues to enjoy a massive fan following, but his films are arriving very slowly. On top of that, budgets involving Ajith have become extremely high-risk now. Producers are becoming cautious because recovery pressures are enormous.

And then comes the biggest shift of all. Ilayathalapathy Vijay moving fully into politics and becoming the Chief Minister has completely changed the commercial equation of Tamil cinema. For nearly two decades, Vijay occupied that undisputed mass commercial throne in Kollywood. Distributors, exhibitors, and brands all revolved around his market. Now suddenly, that space looks vacant.

That is where Suriya’s positioning becomes very interesting. Yes, he has delivered back-to-back disappointments in recent years. His box office consistency is nowhere close to peak Vijay or Rajini levels. But despite these failures, Suriya still carries strong goodwill across Tamil and Telugu markets. And Karuppu success in the Kollywood is just adding to that.

However, we have to see how much Suriya will be using to his advantage really. Because choosing the right script is always important and the 50 year old is failing there exactly from some time.
