In what is being seen as a maverick idea, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has proposed something very similar to what AP Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has suggested for Andhra Pradesh. On the lines of YS Jagan's idea of three capitals for the all round development of the state, Himanta Biswa Sarma too has proposed that the country as big as India should have at least five capital cities.
Making this proposal via Twitter, he said that this alone will be able to drive out regional disparities. He made this suggestion during his Twitter war with Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal. He said that there should be five capitals for five regions of the country â north, south, east, west and the centre. He said this would prevent the unnecessary concentration of power and wealth in Delhi.
Interestingly, YS Jagan too has suggested a similar panacea for all round development of Andhra Pradesh. He said that capitals in Vizag, Amaravati and Kurnool would lead to the equal distribution and proper decentralization of power. He suggested that the administrative capital should be in Vizag, legislative capital at Amaravati and judicial capital in Kurnool. It is another matter that the proposal is caught in legal wrangles.
Interestingly, there has for long been a demand for a second capital for India. In fact, Ambedkar had suggested that Hyderabad be made the second capital of India. The issue came up during the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, but did not find favour of both the Central and the State Governments. Assam CM's latest proposal has stirred up the issue which has been lying dormant all these years.
