Beti Bachao, beti Padhao Funds Used For Advertising: Report!

Update: 2021-12-10 09:22 GMT
The less percentage of girl children who take up education is a serious concern for the country. Over the years, the percentage is not improving. As a bid to take the percentage up, the Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) which rose to power in 2014 had launched the flagship scheme 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' in 2015. The scheme was widely campaigned across the states.

But the Committee on Empowerment of Women gave a contrast report on the scheme while addressing the Lok Sabha the other day. While submitting the fifth report on Women Empowerment, the Committee led by Maharashtra BJP Lok Sabha MP Heena Vijaykumar Gavit presented the data in the house.

The Committee on Empowerment of Women said, out of Rs 848-crore budget allocated for the scheme, only Rs 156.46 crore has been spent to implement the scheme. The Rs 156.46 crore funds were given to the states by the Centre. What’s even shocking is that more than 78 percent of the funds were spent on advertising itself.

The Committee expressed its dissatisfaction over the scheme not performing as expected. The report said a mere 25.13% of the funds were spent by the states. On top of that, 78.91% of funds that were released between 2016- 2019 were spent on media advocacy alone, it said.

The flagship scheme which was introduced by the Union government with a big purpose not performing as expected is a big concern. Hope the Centre looks into the matter and makes sure that the purpose of bringing the scheme is served.

Since the start of the pandemic, the schools are not working as they did in the past and the scheme could not be implemented last year and the current year too. But we have to see how the government fares well in taking the scheme to the people and making girl children take up the education in the next academic year.

The scheme focuses on encouraging girls to take up education by holding awareness campaigns and increasing the welfare services in the area. As a pilot project, the scheme was launched in Haryana and then extended to other states as well.
