Bipin Rawat Chopper Crash: IAF Calls For Tri-service Inquiry!

The Chief of Defence Staff of the Indian Armed Forces Bipin Rawat who served the nation by holding various key positions before being appointed as the CDS passed away the other day due to a helicopter crash.12 others including his wife were also killed in the crash.

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh who addressed the Lok Sabha said that the Centre is announcing the sad news with profound grief. He conveyed the sad news to the members of the house during the ongoing winter sessions of Parliament. After he shared the sad news, the house observed silence for two minutes.

Rajnath Singh also announced that a tri-service inquiry to look into the chopper crash was initiated by the Indian Air Force (IAF). Providing more details, the Minister said Air Marshal Manavendra Singh will lead the investigation and said, the investigation had started.

The Defence Minister said, the last rites of Bipin Rawat would be made with Military honors, while the other personnel who lost lives will also be honored by holding last rites with the right military honor.

Rajnath Singh gave full details on the events in the chopper crash. Addressing the house, the Defence Minister said Bipin Rawat was supposed to reach the Defence Services Staff College and address the student officers there. To visit the College, Bipin Rawat boarded an Air Force Mi 17 V 5 helicopter.

The Air Traffic Control lost contact with the chopper. Minutes after this, the locals found fire in the forest and rushed to the spot, he said.

Upon reaching the spot, they found a military chopper that was in flames. The rescue teams rushed to the spot. The rescue team recovered the bodies and sent for the DNA tests, he added.

The Mortal remains of Bipin Rawat and others were shifted to the Madras Regimental Centre at Wellington from the crash spot earlier today. The Tamil Nadu government and veteran Army personnel have paid floral tributes to them at the venue. The army trucks were used to shift the bodies.

Earlier today, the Uttarakhand Assembly had paid tributes to Bipin Rawat and others. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and others paid floral tributes to them.
