Celebrated Environmentalist, founder of Chipko Movement passes away due to Covid
In an unfortunate incident, celebrated environmentalist Sundarlal Bahuguna passed away due to novel Coronavirus on Friday at 12.05 pm. The environmental activist was 94 years old.
Sundarlal Bahuguna had tested positive for the novel Coronavirus earlier in May and was shifted to hospital for treatment on May 8. Since then, he has been undergoing treatment for the virus. His health condition deteriorated after his oxygen level fell.
"Due to Covid-19, he had also developed pneumonia which worsened his health condition along with high blood sugar and hypertension. However, a special team of doctors was assigned to look after him at the hospital while providing every possible treatment to him," the media relations officer at AIIMS Rishikesh was quoted as saying by ANI.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media to condole th death of the celebrated environmentalist and called his death, a monumental loss for the nation.
"Passing away of Shri Sunderlal Bahuguna Ji is a monumental loss for our nation. He manifested our centuries old ethos of living in harmony with nature. His simplicity and spirit of compassion will never be forgotten. My thoughts are with his family and many admirers. Om Shanti," Narendra Modi said in a tweet.
Bahuguna has dedicated his entire life to creating awareness to people against the destruction of the forests and Himalayan mountains. He had founded the Chipko Movement against deforestation in the 1970s.
