Centre Tells Its Stand Clear on Same-Gender Marriages!

Update: 2023-04-17 16:06 GMT
Granting legal status to same-sex marriages in India is not a new one and we are hearing a lot about the demand for some time now. Earlier, the Union government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party said that it is against the practice as the norms in India are different. Yet again the Center said its stand on this.

In what could be seen as a big setback for people who are expecting the possibility of legal sanction for same-sex marriages in India, the Center once again made its stand clear and said that it is opposing this. The Centre also said that the Courts should refrain from giving orders.

The Supreme Court is all set to hear a bunch of petitions that seek legal status for same-sex marriages on Tuesday. The five-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud will hear the petitions. The bench will also comprise Justices SK Kaul, Ravindra Bhat, Hima Kohli, and PS Narasimha.

Ahead of the hearing, the Centre said that it is opposing this and also gave reasons for this. The Union government in its response said that the petitions display mere urban elitist views.

Same-sex marriages are legal in many Western nations. But the situation is different in India and our society is seen as a traditional one. Our society is yet to accept this. Even if we look at the aspect from the religious law aspect, marriage is seen as a ceremony between a man and a woman. The Centre said the same in its response.

Centre made its stand clear on this and submitted its version to the court. Now the ball is in the court of the Supreme Court. Will the court consider the points mentioned by the Centre while giving a verdict or will the Apex Court go forward with its flow has to wait and see.

Now all eyes are on the Supreme Court to see what the court will say. The activists are keeping their fingers crossed to see if India is on the verge of giving legal status to same-sex marriages. We will get clarity on this in a few more hours from now.
