As part of its efforts to get a complete grip over the voters in Telangana, ruling TRS has prepared a three pronged strategy to win a landslide in the cooperative sector too. The party wants to continue its winning streak and is said to be doing everything at its command to achieve it.
There are 11,765 director posts in 905 Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies in Telangana. The TRS wants to win a maximum number of them without any contest. The MLAs, MLCs, Ministers and the MPs are trying to ensure that there are unanimous elections. They are trying to persuade candidates from other parties to withdraw from the contest. Secondly, the government has greatly reduced the number of voters in the cooperative societies. Although there are 35.66 lakh members in the cooperative societies in the state, as many as 14 lakh members have been denied voting rights claiming that they have pending loans worth more than Rs 1 lakh. Those who have not paid their membership fees have also been deleted from the voters list. There have been complaints galore that there would be fake votes in the polling.
Thirdly, the government is giving little time for the opposition parties to prepare for the elections. The time for filing nominations will end on February 8 and the polling would be held on February 15. The results would be declared on the same day. The unprepared opposition appears to be in a quandary as to how to stem the TRS tide. The political observers say that the the TRS will have a cakewalk in the cooperative elections.
