Dance bars in Maharashtra will be back in business soon. The Supreme Court has ordered a stay on the ban on dance bars in Mumbai. Supreme Court puts stay on a law banning dance performances in bars, hotels and restaurants in the state. The court, however, said the dignity of women should be protected and it was the duty of the state police to ensure that it was done. Maharashtra's Govt has banned dance performances in 2014 and several women affected with the ban and lost livelihood.
After the court order, BJP's Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said his government "stood by the law passed by the earlier government". The ban on dance bars was first issued in the year 2005. However, the order was quashed by the Supreme Court in 2013. Later Congress-NCP government amended the Maharashtra Police Act and re-introduced the ban in new avatar. Now once again SC issued stay and this move paves the way to issue licenses and re-open the dance bars.
