Dipa Karmakar created history by becoming the first Indian woman gymnast to qualify for the Rio Olympics with a superb display of skill at the final qualifier and olympic test event in Rio de Janeiro. She is also the first Indian gymnast to qualify for the quadrennial extravaganza after 52 years.

In the Women's Artistic Category, The 22-Year-Old occupied 9th Position in the first of the four sub-divisions. She managed to get 52.698 points in the qualifier to reserve her berth for Artistic Gymnastics in Rio Olympics scheduled to take place in August 2016.

Dipa scored 15.066 points in her first vault, performing Produnova, to emerge as the topper among the 15 contestants. She, however, recorded second worse score in the uneven bars category, which brought down her points to 11.700.

Until now, 11 Indian Male Gymnasts have participated in Olympics (2 in 1952, 3 in 1956 and 6 in 1964). This is for the first time an Indian Woman will take part in Olympics.
