Former Indian footballer Carlton Chapman passed away on Monday reportedly due to a heart attack. He was 49. He was hospitalised on Sunday night in Bengaluru and breathed his last early this morning.
A product of the Tata Football Academy in the early 1990s, Carlton joined East Bengal in 1993 and scored a hat-trick for the Kolkata club against Al Zawra of Iraq in Asian Cup Winners Cup.
A creative midfielder, he played for India between 1995 and 2001 and the country won the 1997 SAFF Cup under his captaincy.
He won 14 titles, including the first edition of National Football League along with Bhaichung Bhutia and I M Vijayan. Carlton Chapman took over as the technical director of Quartz FC in Kochi in 2017.
