Former Lok Sabha Speaker PA Sangma Dies

Lok Sabha speaker P.A. Sangma is no more. He died of a heart attack on Friday morning and he was 68 years old.P.A. Sangma  was the Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 1996 to 1998 and also served as Chief Minister of Meghalaya from 1988 to 1990.Born on September 1, 1947 in village Chapahati of Meghalaya, Sangma grew up in the small tribal village and struggled hard to rise in life.

Sangma was one among the founding members of the NCP. He also joined the All India Trinamool Congress for a short period. He formed his own National People's Party in 2013.

He represented the Tura parliamentary constituency for nine terms, including the incumbent 16th Lok Sabha. Sangma unsuccessfully contested against Pranab Mukherjee in the presidential election. He lost by more than 3 lakh votes.

Meanwhile, current Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan read an obituary for the departed leader and the house observed a two minute silence before it was adjourned for the day.
