Gita too teachers Jihad?: Veteran Congressman sparks off controversy

Update: 2022-10-21 04:48 GMT
The Congress, it appears, is hell-bent on losing the hard-core Hindutva voter. Senior Congress stalwart Shivraj Patil has raked up a controversy when he said that even Bhagavad Gita, the holiest of the Hindu texts, has the concept of Jihad. He said that even Christianity has concepts that are very close to the Jihad.  This has become controversial with Hindutva groups demanding Patil to apologise.

Speaking at a book launch, Patil, who had served as the Lok Sabha speaker and a union minister, said that Arjuna was taught Jihad by Lord Krishna himself. He justified Jihad saying that Jihad is inevitable if one refuses to understand even after patient explaining.  Hence Lord Krishna talks of Jihad to Arjuna, Shivraj Patil told the audience.

He spoke in praise of a book written by former union minister Mohsina Kidwai and said the book talked about enduring world peace. The BJP has said that Patil's statements bordered on Hindu hate. He said Patil's statement comes close on the heels of similar Hindu-bashing by AAP's Gopal Italia and Rajendra Paul.

Patil, who is 87 now, said he had voted for Sonia Gandhi's nominee Mallikarjun Kharge. However, he referred to Kharge as Khandelwal repeatedly. Interestingly, no one tried to correct him. He expressed the hope that Kharge would bring back the old glory to the Congress Party.
