In a shocking development, India reported the highest surge of single-day cases with 16,922 fresh infections in the past 24 hours, which takes the total infections in the country to 4,73,105.
On the other hand, the casualties saw a sharp rise with 418 fatalities reported in the past 24 hours, and the total casualties in connection with the disease climbed to 14,894.
On a brighter note, so far 2,71,696 patients have been cured of the contagious disease, including as many as 13,012 patients managing to recover from the virus in the last 24 hours. The active cases stood at 1,86,514.
Maharashtra(1,42,900), Delhi(70,390), Tamil Nadu(67,468), Gujarat(28,943), Uttar Pradesh(19,557), Rajasthan(16,009) are the worst-affected states in the country due to the virus.
Looking at the fatalities, Maharashtra(6,739), Delhi(2,365) and Gujarat(1,735) top the list with the most number of casualties. These states account for around 70 percent of the total casualties in India.
Worldwide, the total infections of pandemic reached 94 lakhs, while 4.5 lakh people succumbed to the contagious disease. Globally, the infections are increasing by 1 million every week.
