Is the BJP targeting NGOs, civil society organisations, funding agencies?
Till now, IT raids were being done on industrial houses and politicians. The new trend in the BJP government is to target the NGOs and civil society organisations. These organisations are by and large opposed to the BJP government and in some cases are playing a more effective role than the political parties themselves.
Recently, the BJP has begun targeting charity organisations, NGOs and even research organisations. The IT sleuths have conducted raids on the Delhi offices of the international funding agency Oxfam. Similarly, the Centre for Policy Research, a prestigious think-tank, was targeted. Besides, Bengaluru-based Public Spirited Media Foundation (IPSMF) has also been raided.
Interestingly, the IPSMF is the funder for several online and digital media outlets like The Caravan, The Print and Swarajya, which are largely critical of the BJP government. However, the raided organisation and institutions have not issued any public statements on the raids. The IT department too has not come up with any clarification.
The IMSMf has also criticised the report which gave a clean chit to Narendra Modi in the 2002 Gujarat riots. Among the trustees of the organisation are: eminent journalist TS Nivas. Actor Amol Palekar is the trustee of the organisation. Among the donors are Wiproâs Azeem Premji and Nandan Nilekani.
The Centre For Policy Research organisation is headed by former principal of Lady Sriram College Meenakshi Gopinath. The organisation is known to fund several organisations that are critical of the BJP government. The organisation was formed in Bengaluru in 1973.
