Politicians search for personal gains at every opportunity and what makes public servants different from a politician is they use every opportunity for the interests of society. Polavaram is a classic example of this. Chandrababu used the project for his benefit and his aides also ate its fruits. But things changed after Jagan came to power. The Centre also agreed to allot more funds as asked by Jagan.
The massive project has been under construction for a very long time. But no significant development happened. Leaders who became CM after YSR had neglected the project and the estimations went on increasing. With this, people could not eat the fruits of the project.
The Polavaram project has a lot of significance as it can provide irrigation water to as many as 27 lakh acres in the state. 10 Lakh acres in combined Godavari districts and 13 more lakh acres more would be stabilized with the project. Irrigation water can be provided to 4 lakh acres from Polavaram to Vizag from the left canal. 3.20 lakh acres can be provided water till Vijayawada with the 172 km long right canal.
Another significant aspect of the Polavaram project is that it has a massive water storage capacity. 960 megawatts of electricity generation was planned from the project. There is a possibility of supplying drinking water to 540 villages in the Plateau region. 3 lakh acres in three districts can be supplied water under the Babu Jagajjeevan Uttarandhra Sujala Sravanti.
When the Polavaram project had so much importance and significance, Chandrababu brought the Pattiseema Lift Irrigation Project near Polavaram to spoil it. He neglected the crucial Polavaram project and showed interest in completing the Pattiseema project by benefitting the contractors. Despite being a member of the NDA alliance, Chandrababu did not show interest in completing the Polavaram.
A big amount was spent on the Pattiseema project which pumps 70 TMCs of water to the Krishna district. If the same money would have been spent on Polavaram, at least 50 percent of construction would have been finished and the project can pump 80 TMC water if completed. The Chandrababu government wasted public money in the name of the Pattiseema project.
Talking about Jagan's case, the Polavaram project is an example of his efficiency. His government saw a big success in the funds' allocation for the project. As per the 2013-14 prices, 1249 crores should be released. But Jagan showed his ability and received a positive response from the centre. His request was approved and 10,000 crores more were granted. There will be a good pace in the Project works now which is a news to celebrate.
