The unveiling of the statue marks 100 years since Gandhi returned to India from South Africa to begin his struggle for independence. Prime Minister David Cameron spoke at the unveiling of the statue and he called it as a "magnificent tribute to Gandhi. Quoting some of Gandhi's famous words, the British Prime Minister highlighted how his teachings remain as potent today.
Gandhis statue was placed adjacent to iconic leaders Winston Churchill and Nelson Mandela. Gandhis grandson Gopalkrishna Gandhi, Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan and many leaders attended this function.Gandhi is the first Indian to be honoured with a statue at the Square.
