MLA Defies Lockdown, Gathers 100 People, Faces Police Case

Despite Government's high voltage campaign for social isolation and self-quarantine, some politicians still see the Corona as a photo op and an opportunity to woo the voters. A Congress Party MLA from Chhattisgarh did the same and landed himself in trouble.

Congress MLA from Bilaspur Shailesh Pandey felt that he can gain popularity using the Corona crisis and organised a free distribution of essential commodities at his residence in the city. As the news spread, almost a thousand people thronged his home. None of them had masks and no one kept the minimum distance needed. They jostled, pushed and shoved each other. Nothing could be a worst recipe for Corona spread than this.

The police, who came to know about his gross violation of the lockdown, rushed to the spot and booked a case against the MLA under sections 188 144 and 279 of the Indian Penal Code. As part of the Lockdown, section 144 is in force in the whole of Chhattisgarh. The MLA, however, is still defending his actions and said they were done in good faith and hope for public good.
