Retired weightlifter Karnam Malleswari is undoubtedly one of the main reasons behind the sport getting the limelight. In her career, Malleswari has won several medals at various venues.

She hails from Telugu land. Voosavanipeta in Andhra Pradesh's Srikakulam was her birthplace. Despite winning the medals and bringing glory to the sport, she was not honored by her state sadly.

When her home state batted a blind eye towards her, the national capital Delhi on Tuesday announced the appointment of Karnam Malleswari as the first Vice-Chancellor of Delhi Sports University.

The Delhi government led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has taken the Delhi Sports University prestigiously. The main motto behind starting the facility is to provide training for the sportspersons with world-class facilities.

The AAP government, which wants to bid for the 2048 Olympics Games has focused on providing top-notch training for sportspersons with an aim to win 50 gold medals.

Karnam Malleswari scripted history in 1995 to bag a medal at the Olympics games in 1995, making her the first Indian woman weightlifter to do so. She holds the world weightlifting titles in the 54 kg division.

As a bid to honour the legendary weightlifter for her services towards the sport, she was honoured with Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in 1999. She also received the Padma Shri award.
