America Says Goodbye To Net Neutrality

Update: 2017-12-15 17:36 GMT
The USA has taken another important decision which will have an effect on internet technology.  Net neutrality is the principle that Internet service providers must treat all data on the Internet the same, and not discriminate or charge differently by user, content, website, platform, application, type of attached equipment, or method of communication.

Federal Communications Commission of America (FCC) has repealed the rules which were brought in by the then Barack Obama government.  FCC has voted against Net neutrality.  This decision will have an impact on several countries including India.  Internet Service Providers(ISPs) will have full control over the content watched by the internet users from now onwards.  ISPs are arguing against net neutrality while content providers are demanding net neutrality.  As FCC said goodbye to the net neutrality, content providers are getting ready for the legal battle.

Barack Obama government has supported net neutrality and passed regulations in favour of net neutrality in 2005.  These rules used to restrict the Internet Service Providers to intentionally block content, purposefully decrease the speed of some websites.   But ISPs were arguing that they will not decrease the speed but they will increase the speed if someone pays a high price.   Responding to the latest decision, FCC chairman Ajith Pai who is known to be close associate of American President Donald Trump commented that "Net neutrality is nothing but solving a problem which doesn't exist."

Technology experts are commenting that this decision will have an impact on the countries like India in an indirect manner. Companies like Vimeo, Reddit which are competing with Facebook, YouTube will have to face trouble as they will be unable to compete as they can't afford to take on big corporates.  Because big companies will be ready to pay huge amounts to ISPs for the speed.  In such a situation, there will be an impact on the users who use such websites.  But the only respite here is that TRAI has announced that they will not be partial to any website when it comes to the internet.
