How far does a drop of saliva travel when one coughs? Latest studies by the a Singapore based research body claims that a speck of saliva that jets out of the mouth at the time of coughing can go as far up to 8.8 metres. The study also says that if the atmosphere is dry and there is less humidity, there is a likelihood that it could go further.
According to the Singapore-based Institute of High Performance Computing, this shows the importance of social distancing in times of Covid. The study said that the single cough droplet could travel a distance of 8.8 metres when the air speed is 2 metres per second. The studay says that every time a person caughs, he emits as many as 1000 droplets of saliva. The heavier droplets fall down quickly. But, smaller droplets get further divided and travel a longer distance. During this process, the droplets turn into aerosols and easily enter the lungs of those in close distance.
The study conducted using mathematical formulations and computer studies. This study, the institute feels, would be very useful in understanding the spread of the covid virus from person to person. This will help in promoting social distance. The institute is now planning to study social distancing in film theatres and conference halls.
