AP Local Body Elections: SEC Files Counter-Affidavit On Govt's Petition
The saga of local body elections in Andhra Pradesh continues. Days after, the state government gave a shock to SEC Nimmaggada Ramesh Kumar over the polls, now its SEC's turn to shock the state government.
It is known that the Andhra Pradesh government led by Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy filed a petition in the state High Court and told the court that local body polls cannot be conducted and cited Covid-19 vaccine work as the reason.
Now SEC Nommaggada Ramesh Kumar filed a counter-petition in the High Court and asked the court to quash the affidavit filed by the state government on local body polls.
It is said that the SEC in his affidavit maintained that the Coronavirus cases have come down rapidly and schools, theaters, and malls in the state were permitted to resume operations.
Adding further, Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar said the vaccine is still in the trial stage and it will take nearly 3-6 months for the vaccine to roll out. Elections will not cause problems to the vaccine.
The SEC quoted the examples of GHMC elections in Hyderabad, Bihar, and Rajasthan.
The court heard all the arguments and adjourned the next hearing of the petition to Friday, i.e. tomorrow.
The AP government is very firm on its decision over the local body elections since the SEC issued notification for the local body elections stating that the polls will commence in February 2021.
