At the time when Pawan Kalyan became a star, Puri Jagannath wished to direct him and for the same he used to stay in touch with the actor's manager. After a period of 6 months, Puri decided to approach Pawan through cinematographer Chota K Naidu who is an elder brother of his good friend Shyam K Naidu.

When Puri met Chota K Naidu for this project, the cinematographer asked him to narrate the story to him first and prmised to forward it to Pawan Kalyan if it has got potential. Anticipating that a story like 'Badri' willn't be accepted by many, Puri narrated the story of 'Itlu Sravani Subrahmanyam' film to Chota and then he requested Pawan to offer his ear.

Pawan Kalyan has give 4 am appointment to Puri Jagannath for the narration. As soon as the filmmaker met him, Pawan informed him he has got only half-an-hour to narrate the story. Knowing that such a story (Badri) can't be narrated in half-an-hour, Puri requested Pawan to listen to him until he gets bored. Pawan's manager used to open the door of our room and check if I was irritating the actor. The narration continued for a stretch of 4 hours and Pawan didn't ash him to end at any movement. In the end, Pawan said he liked the story but asked to modify the climax to be launched as the director.

Puri wrote 5 more climax blocks for 'Badri' but none of them satisfied him. He narrated the same old climax to Pawan Kalyan when he met him after a week. When Pawan questioned why he doing so, Puri admitted he isn't satisfied with any of the new versions. Then, Pawan revealed he is just judging the character of Puri on the basis of whether he will change the climax for him or sticks to what he felt was right. Immediately, Pawan said he liked Puri and okayed the project.
Puri also confessed before Pawan that he narrated 'Badri' story instead of 'Itlu Sravani Subrahmanyam' as it was the film he wishes to direct with him.

During one of the discussions at the time of shooting, Pawan Kalyan asked Puri if he had seen any of his past films and the director replied 'NONE'. Then Pawan asked Puri why he had come to direct him, to which the director replied, "You have got a market and have the good name that you encourage young directors. I really don't know how you will act".

Puri is a die-hard fan of Amitabh Bachchan and stopped watching films due to frustration that the legendary actor is doing bad films like Mard. For the last 15 years, he hasn't watched many films and even watched only 'Athadu' before directing Mahesh Babu's Pokiri.
