Daggubati Purandeswari joined the BJP back in 2014. After almost a decade of joining the party, she got recognition. Political circles say that Daggubati Purandeswari got late recognition who earlier served as the Union Minister for 10 years and as a Cabinet Minister for five years. At last, she was appointed as the AP BJP chief by the leadership.
Purandeswari is the daughter of TDP founder NTR who served as the Chief Minister of the combined state. She became the daughter-in-law of the Daggubati family which is popular in Prakasam district. Her husband Doctor Daggubati Venkateswara Rao played a big role in the combined AP 30 years back.
Venkateswara Rao was with NTR when he floated TDP and he was the right hand of NTR for around 12 years. Though he took the side of Chandrababu when the party became two parts, he parted ways with Chandrababu in a few months. He went back to NTR. Before 2004, he was with the BJP. Later he joined the Congress and became an MLA.
Daggubati Purandeswari walked with her husband and joined the Congress party. She won the 2004 elections and became the Union Minister. She held the Union Minister of State post in UPA's first term and became the Human Resources Minister in 2009. She left Congress in 2014, against the decision to bifurcate the combined AP.
She joined the BJP before the 2014 elections and contested as the MP from Rajampet. However, she lost the elections. Though she won the elections in 2004 and 2009 in Bapatla and Vizag, she could not repeat the same in Rajampet.
There is strong criticism that Daggubati Purandeswari did not get the recognition she deserves despite 10 years of joining the party. She comes from a big political party and personally, she has a legacy. Many say that the BJP government failed to use her services.
However, she was made a part of Mahila Morcha and was given the responsibility of Odisha state. She was not given any recognition in the state and center. Lastly, she was given recognition by appointing her as the AP BJP chief.
