The Congress Presidential Polls episode went through many twists and turns as of now. Though many names popped up and a few leaders expressed their interest in running the polls, only two leaders made it to the final cut, and the senior leaders would lock horns with each other for the big post.
Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor and Mallikarjun Kharge are the contenders for the Congress chief post. Though both candidates look strong, Kharge is looking strong as he is always been dubbed as a strong loyalist of the Gandhi family.
Things are not going well for Shashi Tharoor. Besides reports on the Gandhi family favouring Mallikarjun Kharge, the majority of the leaders are reportedly supporting him and wants him to win the polls. It is also said that the leaders are angry at Shashi Tharoor for spoiling the efforts to make the polls unanimous.
Speaking to the media, Mallikarjun Kharge said that he wanted a consensus on the candidate for the chief post. He told the same to Shashi Tharoor and he opted for an election and that's why the election is announced.
As an example of support enjoyed by the seniors in the party, three spokespersons of the grand old Congress announced their resignation the other day to support Mallikarjun Kharge. They said that they can't hold any post in the party while campaigning for Kharge and that's why they took the decision.
Gourav Vallabh, Deepender Hooda, and Syed Naseer Hussain resigned as Congress spokespersons. A letter saying the same was sent by the three leaders to Sonia Gandhi.
On the other hand, Shashi Tharoor doesn't have such support, and no big leaders openly supported him. The Congress leaders want the Gandhi family member to be the chief of the party. Gandhi's family members distanced themselves from the polls. So the leaders are expected to vote for the Gandhi family loyalist and Mallikarju Kharge might get benefitted from this.
Moreover, Mallikarjun Khadge is a Dalit, and a Dalit man leading the party would send a strong message. Looking at all these issues, Shashi Tharoor might be a lone warrior in the polls.
