Does the name Shobhan Sarkar ring a bell? The answer is likely to be a resounding NO. But, during the Akhilesh Yadav rule in UP, this sanyasi was taken quite seriously. One night he saw 1000 tonne gold in the dilapidated building of a former king in Unnao in his dreams . Believing his dream, the UP Government had spent huge amounts and conducted diggings for nearly 29 days.
The digging was taken up under strict security of the police and the Sadhu was personally directing the operations. Despite many people criticizing for believing the premonitions of a sadhu, the UP Government under Akhilesh Yadav went ahead and conducted digging. Finally, after 29 daysof search and lot of hard digging, the government abandoned the idea on November 10 , 2013. After that Shobhan Sarkar was not heard or seen in public life. But his disciples continued to adore and follow him.
This maverick sadhu died in his Ashram in Unnao on Wednesday morning. As soon as the news of his death broke, hundreds of his devotees defied lockdown and rushed to the ashram to catch his last glimpse.
