Former Indian player and skipper Sourav Ganguly, fondly called as 'Dada’ and 'Prince of Kolkata’ is celebrating his 49th birthday on Thursday. During his tenure as skipper, Sourav Ganguly has brought a fearless attitude into the team.

The BCCI had handed over the captaincy to Sourav Ganguly when team India was going through a tough phase. Under his captaincy, India underwent a massive transformation and young players were groomed by him.

On his birthday, let us revisit an interesting incident. When Sourav Ganguly was leading India, most bookies had a thought of convincing him to fix matches. But no one dared to approach him with the same intention.

A leading global sports and esports news website Sportskeeda interviewed a former bookie earlier. In the interview, the former bookie said, no one has the guts to approach Sourav Ganguly.

Sourav Ganguly was one of the players, who brought glory to the game. He is one of the successful captains of India, who shaped the career of so many young bowlers and captains.

Players like former skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, ace spinner Harbhajan Singh, Ashish Nagar, Yuvraj Singh, and others were encouraged by Sourav Ganguly.

Dada made his international debut against West Indies in 1992 in One Day International (ODI). Despite making a debut in 1992, it was his Test debut that brought the best in him. He scored a century in his debut match on Lords’s debut.

In his career, Sourav Ganguly scored 22 tons with 11363 runs in the 50-over format, while he made 7212 runs and represented India in 113 games. He scored 16 centuries and 35 half-centuries in the Test format.

Despite transforming the team, Sourav Ganguly had a rough phase during the last days of his career. Even after winning against Zimbabwe, he was removed as skipper in 2005 and he was also removed from the Test squad in 2006. Ganguly called the entire episode an 'injustice’.

After leaving a mark in cricket as a player and skipper, Sourav Ganguly became Board of Control for Cricket in India(BCCI) President. He played a big role in conducting the IPL in 2020 despite the Covid impact.
