South Indian states are head and shoulders above the North Indian states in terms of liquor sales. In the last five days liquor worth Rs 71 crore has been sold across the country and 45 per cent of the sales are reported from the four South Indian states. Telangana is leading in terms of beer and liquor sales over all other states.
According to CRISIL, Tamil Nadu is accounting for 13 per cent of the total liquor sales, while Karnataka accounts for 12 per cent, AP 7 per cent, Telangana 6 per cent and Kerala accounts for 5 per cent of the sales. Revenue wise, however, Kerala leads as it has the highest tax rate on liquor. Karnataka, AP and Telangana are in the second position, while Delhi is in the third position in terms of revenue generation. According to the sources, the Andhra has sold 288 crates, while Telangana leads with 201 crates, Tamil Nadu has sold 563 crates. In terms of liters too Tamil Nadu leads
After initial enthusiasm, the financially poorer sections in the society are now not thronging the wine shops. With the government not yet selling cheap liquor, they do not have the resources to buy costly liquor.
