Technical team to probe Pegasus issue will be constituted: CJI

Update: 2021-09-23 11:41 GMT
The Pegasus software row that had made the Union Government faced the wrath of the opposition parties and the Supreme Court had come up for the hearing on Thursday. During the hearing, the Chief Justice of India(CJI) NV Ramana said that a committee with technical experts would be set up.

The Supreme Court said that the orders on the setting up of the committee will be issued next week. The process is taking time as a few experts the court wanted in the committee refused to be in the team for personal reasons, the court said.

The final list of the members of the committee would be finalised soon and the orders on the same would be issued next week, the court said.

The Supreme Court said everything related to the issue cannot be put in a public affidavit as there are a few questions on national security. We cannot put the information on a public affidavit, but we want an expert team to probe the issue. The bunch of petitions that were filed in the court seeks directives from the court to enable the Centre to constitute a committee to look into such matters.

It has to be noted that the constitutional bench led by CJI NV Ramana heard a petition on the same issue on the 13th of this month. The top had reserved its order in the issue.

Earlier the Supreme Court said that the court has no interest to look into the matters that deal with the security matters and defense matters of the country. We are expressing our concerns over the allegations that devices used by particular people like journalists and politicians are being compromised. the SC said.

After the news of the alleged strike of Pegasus software used on mobile phones used by journalists, politicians and others were out, the opposition parties lashed out at the Centre over their privacy. The Centre not discussing the Pegasus issue added fuel to the protests of the opposition parties.

The issue had reached the Supreme Court with a few activists and organisations moving the top court asking for a judicial probe into the matter.
