What's behind Venkaiah's AP tours?

Update: 2022-09-10 04:46 GMT
He had served as the vice-president of the country and had made a mark of his own. He has held the second highest post in the country. But, instead of enjoying retired life, Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu is now touring various parts of Andhra Pradesh. He is meeting old friends and supporters in a planned way and this is raising eyebrows in the party.

Though he is talking about his usual pet peeves like upholding the values of parliamentary democracy and the promotion of mother tongue at these meetings, many analysts feel there is more to his tours than meets the eye. He has recently visited Rajamahendri city and is on course to meet the old friends in Vijayawada too.

The presence of TDP biggie such as former minister Alapati Rajendranath, a known TDP backer in the BJP Dr Kamineni Srinivas and YSRCP MLC Dokka Manikya Varaprasad at the Rajamahendri meeting has raised quite a few eyebrows. Interestingly, former AP BJP president Kanna Lakshminarayana, who was accused of being pro-TDP and had to be replaced, was also present at the meeting. Sources say that Venkaiah is likely to organize similar meetings in Vijayawada and other places.

Many BJP leaders, who had opposed Venkaiah Naidu, while he wielded authority in the BJP, feel that Venkaiah’s forays are meant to provide a leadership to one of the most powerful and politically inclined communities in the state. After completing the vice-presidential term, one is expected to retire gracefully. But Venkaiah’s activism is raising doubts, they say.
