Religion is a very sensitive matter in any part of the world. No words can describe the sensitivity of the matter in a nation like India, where people belonging to various religions live together. Unfortunately, the records says, the fights and issues between the religions in India have increased like never before which is a dangerous trend.
Moreover, a few Right-wing organizations are alleging that forceful conversations are happening in the nation and that have to be stopped. Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled Karnataka tabled a bill in the Assembly house which says that forceful conversations should be stopped.
Amid this, a sensational bill that seeks directives to take strict measures to stop fraudulent religious conversions was filed in the Supreme Court. Supreme Court lawyer and BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay, who is known as the king of filing PILs filed the petition.
The Supreme Court bench comprising Justices M R Shah and Krishna Murari heard the petition on Friday. After accepting the plea, the Supreme Court bench served notices to the Union of India, Ministry of Home Affairs, and Ministry of Law and Justice seeking their response on this.
In his petition, Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay maintained that at regular intervals, stories of forceful conversations pop up in the country and it is a serious issue that needs to be addressed at the earliest. The next hearing was posted to the 14th of next month.
Now it is interesting to know how the Union government will react to this and what the saffron party will say in its response. The BJP earlier tightened the rules of getting funding for the missionaries and that is dubbed as a hammer blow for the missionaries. So the BJP might say yes to the petition and frame the guidelines for strict action.
The opposition parties and the governments in Tamil Nadu and Kerala will surely oppose the petition given the vote bank. Kerala has the highest Christian population and the Christian missionaries are very strong in Tamil Nadu. Earlier it was reported that the churches campaigned for the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam(DMK) for general polls. The issue will turn into political controversy for sure.
