The BJP lost three states that it held for years. It fared poorly in Telangana. It won just one MLA seat in Mizoram. So, some people are trying to argue that the BJP is down and out and are claiming that there is an anti-Modi wave sweeping the country. Some unfortunate comments by Union Minister and former BJP national president Nithin Gadkari, misinterpreted by a section of media, were being shown as proof of an anti-Modi mood building up in the country in general and within the BJP in particular. Nithin Gadkari said victory has many fathers and failure is an orphan. He added that everyone has to own up responsibility for the defeat. These were seen as anti-Modi statements. But, Gadkari himself had to clarify that his was being misinterpreted and that there was a conspiracy to malign him.
Leave it at that! Is there an immediate replacement for Modi in the BJP? No! So, the BJP will have to sail with Modi and project Modi only. Everyone in the BJP will have to fall in line. Those who fail to follow in line have slowly been edged out. Within the party, Modi's grip is complete and he still is the most popular leader in the country. Any real challenge, if any, to Modi can come only after 2019 elections. Till then there is no one to challenge him. If anyone can bring the party back to power, it is Modi alone.
