Why Bihar Cabinet Expansion Draws Comparisons From Maharashtra?

Update: 2022-08-16 07:16 GMT
The saffron party Bharatiya Janata Party suffered a big shock with the political crisis in Bihar. Using the game plan BJP uses against other parties, BJP's ally party Janata Dal (United) quit the alliance and joined hands with the opposition parties. As the great alliance has the required support new government was formed and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was sworn in recently.

Now the great alliance is gearing up for the Cabinet expansion. Though Janata Dal (United) chief Nitish Kumar got the Chief Minister and the party legislators would get the Cabinet posts, one of the alliance parties Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) is likely to get the most of the cabinet expansion. The Cabinet expansion would happen today.

Given the strength of legislators RJD has, the party is expected to get the highest number of Cabinet posts including the key portfolios. JDU would get the next highest followed by the other parties based on the strength of the MLAs they have.

Though JDU has the Chief Minister post, RJD would get an upper hand by taking key portfolios. The possible development made many compare the political scenario in Bihar with that of Maharashtra.

In Maharashtra Shiv Sena rebel MLA Eknath Shinde became the Chief Minister with the help of the Bharatiya Janata Party. The saffron party which has a strength of around 100 MLAs came in support of Eknath Shinde and the strong Shiv Sena leader was given the Chief Minister post.

While Eknath Shinde became the Chief Minister, BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis became the Deputy Chief Minister. Besides this, he was offered key portfolios of Home and Finance also making him the key member of the Maharashtra Cabinet.

Now the same situation is likely to get repeated in Bihar as the RJD is expected to get an upper hand in the Cabinet expansion. we have to wait and see how Nitish Kumar would deal with the situation. Alliance party getting key posts in the Cabinet gives an opportunity for it to dictate terms for the government. If the government will not listen then the alliance would be broken pulling down the government. We have to wait and see how Nitish Kumar would deal with it.
