Why Covid 19 Cases Are Again Growing In Kerala ?

Update: 2020-09-02 05:20 GMT
Kerala, which was touted as a rare oasis of success in otherwise dreary desert ofrising Covid cases, is back in the news.  There is a fresh spurt in the number of Covid positive cases in the state. Now, Kerala ranks 14th in the country in terms of case load.

By April last week, Kerala claimed victory over Covid cases and touted his story as the Kerala Model.Reems were written about Kerala success story. It claimed that it had managed to flatten the corona curve even as other states were grappling with it. But now, it turns out that Kerala has a huge case load and the number is only growing.  As on September 1, Kerala had reported 76525 positive cases. At least 31 percent of them are active cases. This is way too higher than the national average of 21 per cent. Even in Maharashtra, which has the highest number of cases in the country, the active cases are only 25per cent of the total.

It now emerges that the fewer cases reported in May was mainly due to the low number of tests performed. In the month of May and June, the Kerala Government has lowered the number of daily tests to less than 500. As a result, the number of positive cases also came down. Now, the tests have been ramped up and no wonder, the number of positive cases too has gone up.

Till may, only 10 per cent of the cases were from local transmission and the remaining were from those with travel history. Now, only 19 per cent of the cases are from those with a travel history. Sources say that there are over 200 clusters with multiple cases. The medical personnel in the state are focusing on these clusters to contain the spread of the virus.
