Why Did Chandrababu Back Off From Bypoll Demand On Amaravati?

Why did the TDP back off from its demand for resignations of the MLAs and seek re-election on the  issue of three capitals? If sources are to be believed, some clever back-of-the-envelope calculations by Chandrababu's close team have convinced that the party would lose several of the sitting seats and would end up as a joke if it presses for a bypoll. Hence Chandrababu decided to give the demand a quiet burial.

Party's internal assessment is that at least three of the MLAs have already defected to the YSRCP and they would come back to the assembly on a YSRCP ticket. This will be three-seat loss. Then, at least three sitting MLAs are quite unpopular and may not keep their seats. If this happens the party might hope for a fight in only 16 seats.

Even within these 16 seats, the MLAs from Rayalaseema and North Coastal Andhra are entirely with Chandrababu Naidu on the issue of Amaravati. What will be their stand? Will they oppose three capitals and lose the support of their voters? Chandrababu knew that this was a tricky situation. Hence, he backed off from his demand.
