Lok Sabha elections were game-changers in 2014. Will they be same this time too? Last time, the BJP swept the polls and literally wiped out the Congress. But this time around, anti-BJP parties like SP and the BSP have come together and the Congress is trying to cut into the BJP vote back. So, there are expectations that the BJP numbers will go down this time. The Maha Gath Bandhan will eat into the BJP seats and this may very well affect the final tally of the BJP.
Till now, the voting for 53 of the 80 MP seats in UP has been completed. Assessments show that the honours would be evenly shared by both the BJP and the Maha Gath Bandhan in the first five phases. In the sixth phase, polling would be done for 14 more seats. All these are considered SP-BSP strongholds. These parties could emerge as the 'lotus-eaters.' If the BSP-SP vote transfer is done perfectly, then the BJP could win only one of the 14 seats. The BJP would have to remain content with the second position in the other constituencies. So, this phase could prove to be a real game-changer.
