The BJP, it appears certain, is all set to be a dampener for the TDP. The BJP has decided to go by the rule book on the issue of abolition of the AP legislative council. BJP official spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao has said in no uncertain terms that the BJP is not interested in doing any politics on the issue.
Talking to mediapersons, he said the BJP cannot decide anything on its own in this issue. The State Assembly has passed a resolution and forwarded it to Parliament. The Parliament will have to go by what is laid out in the Constitution's Article 169 (1). He also refuted the claims that the BJP was behind the move to abolish the legislative council. When asked if the bill will come up in the current session of Parliament, GVL said that the Central Cabinet secretary or the ministry of Parliamentary affairs will be able to tell this. He said that the Central Government has nothing to do with this.
The BJP, he said will lose two MLCs if the council gets abolished. He said loss or gain for a political party would not matter for the Lok Sabha. The BJP may lose its MLCs, but it does not matter, he said. He said that the party has no interest in this and that it will go only as per the norms laid out in the constitution.
