AI Brings Water Problem: How Many Litres Per Day?
Now it is being established that ChatGPT alone is using around 148 million litres of water per day.
The artificial intelligence revolution across the globe has been leading to several consequences at social and technological level, and we are witnessing something at a natural level now.
Now it is being established that ChatGPT alone is using around 148 million litres of water per day. This is an astonishing number, considering the kind of natural resources, exhaustion that is happening now.
The sad thing here is that these AI centres are using fresh water to process the AI capacity and this would seriously change the fresh water supply chain for the human race as well.
According to market research firm Mordor Intelligence, nearly 1 trillion liters of water were consumed by AI data centers in 2025. That amounts to roughly 264 billion gallons for the year, or the annual water usage of 1.8 million Americans.
AI data centers are currently consuming 550 million gallons of water per day. That’s roughly the same rate of water consumption as the entirety of the world’s bottled water industry.
Certain alternative need to be established by the AI industry so that the freshwater consumption which must be primarily categorised for human use cannot be diverted for AI Centres.
This is perhaps the reason why several countries in the European continent, and also the we have been opposing the establishment of data Centres. This is going to have serious consequences on the nature in the near future as well.
