Cost of one piece of biscuit Rs 1 lakh?
By packing one biscuit less, the company has cheated the consumers to a tune of Rs 29 lakh, he argued .
Missing out just one biscuit in a packet has landed a famous biscuit brand in soup. The popular SunFeast Marie Light brand had to pay Rs 1 lakh to a customer, who filed a case in a Chennai-based consumer court. The producer of the biscuit brand, the ITC, has been directed by the court to pay Rs 1 lakh to one Dilli Babu of Chennai.
When Dilli Babu purchased a pack of SunFeast Marie Light biscuits two years ago, the wrapper cover promised that there would be 16 biscuits in it. But, when counted, there were only 15 biscuits. A miffed Dilli Babu approached the ITC, but the latter did not give a proper response. Hence, he approached the consumer court.
In his complaint, Dilli Babu argued that the cost of each biscuit is Rs 0.75 and that the company produces 50 lakh packets every day. By packing one biscuit less, the company has cheated the consumers to a tune of Rs 29 lakh, he argued .
The ITC argued that the biscuits were sold on the basis of weight. However, on weighing, it was found that the biscuit packets were under-weight. As a result, the court fined the ITC and asked it to pay Rs 1 lakh to Dillibabu. Thus packing one biscuit less has cost the ITC Rs 1 lakh.
