As a coach for the Kolkata Knight Riders team Gautam Gambhir has proved to be quite popular mostly in cricket because of the success that he has achieved. Gambhir does not mince his words and KKR has been coached in a way where there was no room for negotiation and his tactics delivered positive results. Fans soon hoped to see him as a coach for the Indian national team believing his leadership could lead India to significant victories. This expectation became a reality when Gambhir was appointed as head coach after the T20 World Cup.
However Gambhir's journey as India's coach has always been bumpy. While the Indian team won a T20 series against Sri Lanka under his leadership but still they fell short in the ODI series. Following a promising start with a Test series win against Bangladesh, India has faced a harsh 0-3 whitewash in a three-Test series against New Zealand. Fans who were initially enthusiastic now express concern especially as the team aims for major trophies like the Champions Trophy, the World Test Championship (WTC) and the ODI World Cup. India’s chances in the WTC in particular seem to be fading.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) granted Gambhir a level of freedom rarely seen for coaches. Unlike his predecessors Ravi Shastri and Rahul Dravid, Gambhir was allowed to participate in team selection meetings, a role change that sparked considerable discussion. For the upcoming Australian tour he was given significant control over team selection. Decisions like using Mohammed Siraj as a night watchman and placing Sarfaraz Khan lower in the batting order have drawn criticism.
Gambhir has also pushed for young talents like Harshit Rana and Nitish Reddy. Reports suggest he even recommended Nitish as a replacement for star all-rounder Hardik Pandya. Yet, if Gambhir's tactics fail to produce results, the BCCI may review his powers as coach. To keep India's WTC dreams alive, a strong performance in the Australian tour is essential. Fans eagerly wait to see if Gambhir’s strategies can steer India back on a winning path and fulfill the high expectations placed upon him.
