Why Should Polavaram Be Given Prime Minister's Name?
He made the proposal during the discussion held on Polavaram in Rajya Sabha.
The Polavaram project holds a big importance for Andhra Pradesh as it aims at multi-purpose needs. Besides providing irrigation water, the project also aims at hydro power generation and providing drinking water. The crucial project was launched in the combined state. However, the project was not completed even after the state bifurcation.
Now BJP MP G. V. L. Narasimha Rao made a big demand. He said that the project should be named after Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He made the proposal during the discussion held on Polavaram in Rajya Sabha. He requested the Union Minister of Jal Shakti to respond to his request.
His demand started a question of what Narendra Modi had done for the project to name it after him. The scale of the Polavaram project is such that it needs big support from the Union government to speed up things.
BJP has been in power for two consecutive terms and there is no big support for the project, say many. AP was divided without proper capital and the state’s budget was in deficit.
In this condition, the state should get support from the Centre. But the reality was different. In particular, the Union government had not given enough support for the project.
Ten years is not a small period. The Polavaram project would have seen a big development in the project. Be it TDP or YSRCP, both parties tried their best to get the funds for the project and visited Delhi multiple times.
Many say that the Centre should be seen as a major reason behind the delay in the project. If one regime could not get the funds we can understand. But it was the case with both regimes. So we have to admit that there is a problem.
The AP BJP leaders often say that the Centre is helping the state in various manners. But we could not see the support directly. As if that is not enough the MP raised a demand that the project should be named as Prime Minister Polavaram Irrigation Project as every paisa for the project is coming from the Centre.
