The parent company of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and others, Meta is reportedly planning a massive layoff in the company. Meta Platforms is reportedly planning another major round of layoffs that could affect more than 20 percent of its workforce, according to a report by Reuters.

The report states that the company may cut around 15,800 jobs from its global workforce of about 79,000 employees. If the plan goes ahead, it would become the largest round of job cuts at the company since the restructuring period in 2022 and 2023, which was described as the year of efficiency by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Sources familiar with the matter say the possible layoffs are linked to the company’s rising spending on artificial intelligence. Meta is investing billions of dollars to build advanced AI infrastructure, including large data centers, powerful computing systems, and specialized chips needed to train and run AI models.

The company is expanding AI features across its major platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. These investments are seen as necessary for Meta to stay competitive in the fast growing AI industry. However, the heavy spending has increased operational costs, pushing the company to consider reducing its workforce again. According to the report, no final decision or timeline for the layoffs has been announced yet.

Meta previously cut more than 20,000 jobs during the 2022 and 2023 restructuring as part of its effort to control costs and focus on future technologies like artificial intelligence.
