Playing film songs for functions and festivals has become a trend. To make the occasion a special one, popular songs are played. Hotels which host the celebrations also play popular songs. However, playing the songs at the festivities has some issues as they have to pay a certain amount for copyright.

It is said that the copyright societies are collecting a certain amount as copyright for playing the songs. A few people are said to have raised their objections to this and moved the concerned authorities.

As a big relief to people, the Union government is believed to have said that playing songs at the ceremonies and other festivities will not attract any copyright and there is no need to pay any amount. Having said that a few directives were also issued.

The Centre said that playing songs at wedding ceremonies and other festivities will not invite any copyright and people need not pay any amount. The public was als directed to not pay anything for this.

The directives were issued under the Department for Promotion, Industry, and Internal Trade (DPIIT). The body said that what the copyright societies are doing is against the spirit of Section 52 (1) (za) of the Copyright Act 1957.

The directives can be seen as a big relief to the people and hotels. When the copyright societies demand money there will be a big question on who should pay the amount between the same. A few complaints were taken to the DPIIT which gave key orders.

Additionally, the general public is cautioned against complying with any unwarranted demands from individuals, organisations, or copyright societies that breach the section," the body said.
